Traditional Maori Arts (3 hours)

Undertaken either onsite at Tamaki Maori Village in the traditional Pre-European Village, or in the themed Maori Theatre space located centrally at The Realm of Tane, this programme immerses students in the many ancient arts, performance and warfare of Maori. Based upon student’s individual strengths and personal preference, they then have the opportunity to participate in a one hour workshop training in, or creating their own individual piece of art.

By participating in interactive communal village activities within our pre-European Village environment & context, students will gain insight into practical examples of how:

Understand rights, roles & responsibilities of individuals & communities, and how ideologies shape society (responses to differing beliefs)
History: How causes and consequences of past events are significant and shape the life of people & society; understand people’s perspectives on past events; and how trends over time reflect social, economic & political forces.
Geography: Natural & cultural environments are shaped; understand how people interact with natural & cultural environments and how these have changed over time. Understand how diverse values & perceptions influence environmental, social & economic decisions.

Through actively participating in traditional Maori Arts, weaponry handling, training & techniques within our Pre-European Village students will gain firsthand insights into: Personal Identity, Movement Skills, Positive Attitudes, Social & Cultural Factors, Relationships, Identity/Sensitivity/Respect, Interpersonal Skills, Societal Attitudes & Values, Rights/Responsibilities/Laws & People and the Environment

WHA: Traditional Maori Arts SLO 1: Students will be taught specific protocol, understand tikanga and the significance of ritual before they participate in a traditional powhiri (Maori Welcome Ceremony); SLO 2: Students will be involved in an interactive introduction on the many ancient arts, performance and warfare of the Maori. Students will work alongside our village experts, and at their own pace can choose to participate within any of the following interactive past times, represented within the pre-European Maori Village: SLO 3: Students will be involved in learning handling skills and techniques of patu; SLO 4: Students will be involved in learning weaponry handling skills, foot movements and techniques of taiaha; SLO 5: Students will learn a haka; SLO 6: Students will learn the poi; SLO 7: Students will learn a waiata; SLO 8: Students will weave their own traditional flax piece, alongside expert weavers; SLO 9: Students will understand the significance of ta moko art & carving, before creating their own carved piece. Students will have the opportunity to visit an actual real, working traditional Maori Village & Pa site and engage in a range of interactive experiences that will stimulate students learning through participation, listening, touching, tasting, seeing, experimenting, questioning.
