Tourism in Context (1 hours)

Undertaken onsite at the Realm of Tane in the themed Maori theatre, students will firstly experience an address by Company Director and Owner Doug Tamaki. From there, an interactive workshop will take place on the following:

Teachers have the opportunity of “mix and match” programs according to time available onsite, and topic/theme of their study. Or alternatively, together we can create programmes to ‘fit’ within specific study areas.

By participating in interactive workshop activities, students will gain insight into practical examples of how:
Social Studies: Individuals & groups work to promote social justice; understand how cultures adapt and change, how this impacts on society; how conflict can arise from differing cultural beliefs & ideas. Understand rights, roles & responsibilities of individuals & communities, and how ideologies shape society (responses to differing beliefs)
History: How causes and consequences of past events are significant and shape the life of people & society; understand people’s perspectives on past events; and how trends over time reflect social, economic & political forces.
Geography: Natural & cultural environments are shaped; understand how people interact with natural & cultural environments and how these have changed over time. Understand how diverse values & perceptions influence environmental, social & economic decisions.

WHETU: Tourism in Context SLO 1: Students will receive an introductory presentation by Doug Tamaki, outlining the story behind Tamaki Tours Ltd, how Mike & Doug started, and what developments have been undertaken in the past 22 years to ensure the company’s sustainability; SLO 2: Students will participate in an interactive workshop; SLO 3: Students will learn history of Tourism for New Zealand; SLO 4: Students will learn when the first tourists arrived, how long it took them to arrive, and what they were expecting to experience; SLO 5: Students will learn about the heavy involvement of Maori in Tourism- from the origin, through to present day; SLO 6: Students will learn about the impacts of Tourism on local iwi and communities; SLO 7: Students will learn about the management of resources (national, local and business); SLO 8: Students will learn about visitors flows, and tourism markets(international & domestic); SLO 9: Students will learn some basic management principals; SLO 10: Students will learn about sustainability; SLO 11: Students will learn about technology in tourism and the future direction of tourism and visitor expectations. Students will receive a motivational presentation from Company Owner Doug Tamaki, before participating in a range of interactive workshops with experts in the field of cultural tourism – these programmes have been designed to stimulate students learning through participation, listening, seeing, experimenting, questioning.
