Education Programmes OverviewTamaki Heritage Experiences offers students a quality learning experiences – through our a collection of acclaimed Tourism products (Tamaki Maori Village Rotorua and The Realm of Tane) and combines our knowledgeable, highly-trained staff.
The Tamaki team presents a range of memorable encounters for primary, secondary and tertiary students enrolled in any school or learning institution.
Our commitment to enriched learning experiences is enhanced by the offer of pre- and post-visit support information supplied via email or hardcopy, online and along with interactive discussions/feedback between teachers and our staff to support effective learning.
All programmes include a mixture of hands on, tangible and interactive experiences delivered within environments that cannot be duplicated inside classrooms. Workshop lessons, lectures, AV and technology also combine to provide students with informative, high quality, memorable learning encounters.

The 7 programmes we have developed have been designed to:
- Give students maximum insight into traditions, protocols, lifestyle and activities carried out in Pre-European times
- Allow the students to engage fully in the arts and craft of traditional Maori as well as learn the skill of team work in his or her overall contribution to the survival of the entire village
- Try traditional carving alongside master carvers and weave with expert fibre artists
- Experience the wonders of natural Maori healing practices with practitioners of plant medicines, touch therapies and energy healing
- Train with our warriors in the field of Maori Martial Arts
- Learn ancient legends, and how history and genealogy are passed down from generation to generation
- Join in the making of a hangi – preparing the food, cooking the food and of course – eating the result!
- Talk to experts in traditional food & diet of Maori - learn about traditional methods of fishing, eeling, planting and harvesting. Learn preserving techniques
- Allow students the opportunity to engage in Te Reo Language, gain a greater understanding of Identity and Culture: Provide interactive lessons developed for Tikanga, Marae Protocols, and also for Performing Arts, Waiata, Waiataaringa, poi and haka
- Provide a greater understanding of the origin of Maori, the reason why cultures migrate and the significance of our South Pacific Island connection
- Allow students to traverse history in an interactive and informative way, from the arrival of Maori, the arrival of European, the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi – right through to present day

All programmes & framework can be customised for each class visit, and will be developed to match learning levels, ages, school budgets and available time.
