The Realm of Tane – Standard Experience

A dramatic blend of guided tour, character theatre and storytelling, told within a series of magical indoor sets, including a meeting house entrance, and beautiful native garden and a themed indoor theatre in the heart of Rotorua city. This highly personalized experience invites students to join a young Maori woman’s journey as her grandmother and uncle bring understanding about their ancestors and ancient culture, including their values, dramatic stories and struggle in a modern world. Trace the migration star path, taste the plants and learn about the dramatic impact the arrival of European had upon Maori.

History: How causes and consequences of past events are significant and shape the life of people & society; understand people’s perspectives on past events; and how trends over time reflect social, economic & political forces.
Geography: Natural & cultural environments are shaped; understand how people interact with natural & cultural environments and how these have changed over time . Understand how diverse values & perceptions influence environmental, social & economic decisions.

RUA: The Realm of Tane Experience (Rotorua CBD) SLO 1: Students will experience a traditional welcome from our guide as he welcomes them into the indoor theatre set, ‘The Realm of Tane’; SLO 2: Students will enter the dark ramp, through AV technology, sound and light, they will hear the story of Creation – how Maori believe the world began (Rangi & Papa); SLO 3: Students will meet the grandmother and her granddaughter, and will understand the importance of marae. They will hear the wise words of the grandmother as she passes on wisdom, knowledge and legacy to her granddaughter; SLO 4: Students will hear & see the story of the great migration; SLO 5: Students will enter an indoor native garden and learn about the new and temperate land called Aotearoa, and how Maori had to adapt in order to survive; SLO 6: Students will see, touch and taste some of the native plants in the garden, and learn how they were used medicinally in the past, and how they are now used today for cooking in a more contemporary way; SLO 7: Students will enter the themed Maori Theatre, and through our actors, AV, sound and light will hear the history of Aotearoa, from the arrival of European, the Treaty of Waitangi, the Maori Battalion and through to present day; SLO 8: Students will gain a greater understanding of perpetuation of legacy, and the revival of Te Reo Maori through the Kura Kaupapa Schools; SLO 9: Students will gain a greater understanding of New Zealand’s multi-cultural nation. Students will have the opportunity to visit an actual tourism experience, delivered via actors, AV, sound, light and across a number of themed indoor sets. This experience is interactive & stimulates students learning through participation, listening, touching, tasting, seeing, experimenting, questioning and making tangible creations they can take away with them.
This encounter allows students to traverse time – from the beginning to present day.
