Tamaki Maori Village Rotorua – Standard Experience

An opportunity to experience the traditional world of Maori in a genuine Pre European Pa site, or Maori Village, located in a 200 year old Tawa Forest setting. Share in the Powhiri - our ancient ceremony of welcome - before you are invited into the Pre-European village nestled within the ancient Tawa forest. With bonfires blazing, here you will witness time honoured crafts and past-times of the Ngati Tama people. At the heart of the Village, enter our Meeting House and witness a powerful and entertaining Cultural performance. Optional: Dine on Hangi, a mouth watering feast, cooked beneath the ground on hot rocks.

Within our pre-European Village environment & context, students will gain insight into practical examples of:
Social Studies: How individuals & groups work to promote social justice; understand how cultures adapt and change, how this impacts on society; how conflict can arise from differing cultural beliefs & ideas. Understand rights, roles & responsibilities of individuals & communities, and how ideologies shape society (responses to differing beliefs)
History: How causes and consequences of past events are significant and shape the life of people & society; understand people’s perspectives on past events; and how trends over time reflect social, economic & political forces.
Geography: Natural & cultural environments are shaped; understand how people interact with natural & cultural environments and how these have changed over time. Understand how diverse values & perceptions influence environmental, social & economic decisions.

By visiting and participating in activities within our traditional pre-European village – through language knowledge and cultural knowledge, students will select and use language & symbols to communicate (art, craft, whaikorero); manage self and relate to others (individual contribution into workshops) , participate & contribute in communities (social awareness & interacting with others).

TAHI: Tamaki Maori Village Experience (Tumunui) SLO 1: Students will be taught specific protocol, understand tikanga and the significance of ritual before they participate in a traditional powhiri (Maori Welcome Ceremony). Students will work alongside our village experts, and at their own pace can choose to participate within any of the following interactive past times, represented within the pre-European Maori Village: SLO 2: Students will be involved in exploring traditional hunting techniques, SLO 3: Students will be involved in exploring traditional fishing methods; SLO 4: Students will identify and be able to explore & examine the native healing plants within their natural environment; SLO 5: Students will work alongside Maori warriors and learn some basic taiaha steps and warrior training techniques; SLO 6: Students will weave their own traditional flax piece, alongside expert weavers; SLO 7: Students will understand the significance of ta moko art & carving, before creating their own carved piece; SLO 8: Students will be invited to participate in a number of traditional Maori games; SLO 9: Students will learn the traditional cooking techniques before they participate in the lifting of the hangi; SLO 10: Students will identify & discuss the various parts of the Wharenui (or meeting house); SLO 11: Students will watch a live kapa haka performance; SLO 12: Students will enjoy a full traditional hangi buffet meal, followed by a dessert buffet; SLO 13: Students will watch the poroporoaki, official closing ceremony, with speeches, songs of farewell and acknowledgement of all people and their ancestors. Students will have the opportunity to visit an actual real, working traditional Maori Village & Pa site and engage in a range of interactive experiences that will stimulate students learning through participation, listening, touching, tasting, seeing, experimenting, questioning and making tangible creations they can take away with them.
This encounter allows students the opportunity to step back in time and witness life as it would have been before the arrival of European to New Zealand.
