Programme Toru Living Village (2-4 hours)Undertaken onsite out at Tamaki Maori Village, in the traditional Pre-European Village, this programme immerses students into activities, responsibilities, communal living and significance of various buildings and structures found within the fully replicated Maori Village.

By participating in interactive communal village activities within our pre-European Village environment & context, students will gain insight into practical examples of how:
Social Studies: Individuals & groups work to promote social justice; understand how cultures adapt and change, how this impacts on society; how conflict can arise from differing cultural beliefs & ideas. Understand rights, roles & responsibilities of individuals & communities, and how ideologies shape society (responses to differing beliefs)

SLO 1: Students will be taught specific protocol, understand tikanga and the significance of ritual before they participate in a traditional powhiri (Maori Welcome Ceremony); SLO 2: Students will gain a firsthand understanding of activities, responsibilities and communal living within a pre-European Pa Site; SLO 3: Students will gain a firsthand understanding of various buildings and structures within the Maori Village and the materials they were made from; SLO 4: Students will understand the rationale behind location of pa sites, the structural significance of the site, fortification as well as an understanding of trench warfare and inter-tribal conflict; SLO 5: Students will enter the wharenui and learn various names of significant parts within the meeting house; SLO 6: Students will gain an understanding of carvings, panels and how significant information of ancestors and whakapapa were displayed/recorded.
SLO 7: Students will gain an understanding of urupa, and the rituals associated with tangi. Students will work alongside our village experts, and at their own pace can choose to participate within any of the following interactive past times, represented within the pre-European Maori Village; SLO 8: Students will be involved in exploring traditional hunting techniques; SLO 9: Students will be involved in exploring traditional fishing methods; SLO 10: Students will identify and be able to explore & examine the native healing plants within their natural environment; SLO11: Students will learn about traditional foods that were gathered and eaten; Optional SLO 12: Students have the opportunity to prepare, put down and dine upon their own traditional hangi meal. |
Students will have the opportunity to visit an actual real, working traditional Maori Village & Pa site and engage in a range of interactive experiences that will stimulate students learning through participation, listening, touching, tasting, seeing, experimenting, questioning and making tangible creations they can take away with them.
This encounter allows students the opportunity to step back in time and witness life as it would have been before the arrival of European to New Zealand. |
